Reimagining people in vivid, symbolic settings that encapsulate their spirit in paint.
That Girl series
36”x48” acrylic on canvas
part of the “That Girl” series
Poker Night kicks off the That Girl series - a body of work that reimagines my two Grandma’s and my Great Aunt Martha as the ultimate icons. Growing up, they were my first “that girls” -bold, glamorous, hilarious, poised and unforgettable.
This particular piece features both of my Grandmothers, captured in a moment of high-stakes flair. My Dad’s mom sits front and center, nails perfectly filed - a tribute to a childhood memory of her shaping them in second flat in the back of a moving car just after arriving from the airport. Eight years old, sitting in the back seat with her, I watched her precision with amazement. She’s going all in, even wagering her Life Alert. A martini rests beside her - a wink to my Dad ‘s (her son) drink of choice.
Next to her, my Mom’s Mother sits with quiet strength, decked out. in a floral print reminiscent of the legendary Madonna Inn carpet. My Grandma was quiet and some would say shy, but to me she always was strong and iconic. She would show up to a high stakes poker game, even if it made her uneasy, she would be there for her family. She was anxious and nervous, but that never meant she wasn’t strong, beautiful and iconic.
From poker chips to pearls to a strategically placed set of dentures, Poker Night is a celebration of the women who shaped me - sharp, stylish, and full of personality.

The second piece in my That Girl series, “What Happens in Vegas” is a playful yet powerful portrait of my grandmother reimagined as a confident, glamorous bride - soaking in a heart-shaped bubble bath, cocktail in hand, unapologetically papering herself.
The woman depicted is my Dad’s Mother - who married my Grandfather in 1948, as noted in the “just married” sash. A true matriarch, she raised nine children sometimes renting out a chicken coop in the back to other couples, and putting bunkbeds in hallways for the older kids. She lived long enough to meet her great-great grandchild, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, humor and a strong love for her family.
In this piece I am memorializing her not in sacrifice, but in celebration - surrounded by cheeky details like her custom cigarette pack labeled, “something blues”, her bridal garter, vintage phone, and slippers. It’s a joyful tribute to a woman who gave everything to her family and still found a moment to sparkle.
“Pills, Please” is a cheeky, heartfelt tribute to my maternal grandmother — a woman who might’ve seemed soft-spoken, but had unwavering courage when it came to her loved ones.
This painting was inspired by a story from shortly after my grandfather passed. My grandma and her sister Martha — both widows newly navigating life without their lifelong partners — set off on a trip together. It was the first time they’d traveled alone, and when Aunt Martha fell ill, my grandma ventured out by herself in a foreign country, unable to speak the language, just to find her sister cold medicine.
For someone who had been taken care of most of her adult life, this moment showed her quiet strength. She always pushed through fear or discomfort when someone she loved needed her. That duality — the soft-spoken caretaker with an iron will — is captured here with bright humor and style.
The setting is playful: she’s surrounded by pill bottles and peace signs, wearing soft pink with a polka dot, a leopard-print purse and fuzzy heels. It’s a celebration of resilience, sisterhood, and stepping up, even when it’s scary.
